GeoChat AI vs SparkMap: Which Fits Your Needs Assessment?
SparkMap offers a large indicator library through menus and ready-made reports, while GeoChat AI answers healthcare supply-demand questions in a plain-language chat.
Both are used for community health needs assessments. The better pick depends on whether you need breadth of indicators or a fast read on where care access falls short.

What SparkMap is
SparkMap is "a product of" the Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES) at the University of Missouri (About). It has three tools: the Community Needs Assessment (CNA) report builder, the Map Room and an API with access starting at $5,000.
In the CNA, you draw an area, search an address, or select ZIP codes, tracts or other geographies (CNA tool). Selecting fewer than 5 ZIP codes or tracts fills fewer indicators, because of its small-area estimation method.
How SparkMap relates to CHNA.org and Community Commons
In August 2019, Community Commons said its original CHNA report and mapping tool would stay available through CARES Engagement Network. As of November 2026, engagementnetwork.org forwards to CARES HQ, which describes SparkMap as offering "free and subscription-based" tools.
CHNA.org now forwards to a Community Commons CHNA collection. Community Commons lists the SparkMap Community Needs Assessment as a CARES tool. In short, CARES builds SparkMap, and Community Commons is a separate resource site that links to it.
SparkMap plans as of November 2026
| Plan | Price | CNA indicators | Report areas | CNA exports |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free account | $0 | Basic features | Single county | |
| Intro | $179/year or $49/quarter | 100+ | Multi-county | |
| Pro | $999/year or $299/quarter | 165+ | Multi-county | |
| Premium | $4,999/year or $1,499/quarter | 390+ | Custom areas; ZIP reports on annual plans | PDF, Word, Excel |

All figures come from SparkMap's pricing page. Pro and higher add Map Room data upload and one-on-one support. Enterprise is the only plan with multi-user logins, and the FAQ says SparkMap does not offer discounts at this time.
When to choose SparkMap
SparkMap is the stronger choice when breadth of indicators, report templates and a long track record matter most.
- You need a full indicator report. The CNA offers 430 indicators drawn from sources including the Census Bureau, CDC, USDA, the Department of Transportation and the FBI (data page).
- You need benchmarks. Reports can show all indicators, or only those better or worse than the state average (CNA tool).
- You need tract or ZIP detail across many topics. Premium supports custom areas, with ZIP and tract-level packages.
- You need Word or Excel tables to drop into a CHNA document. Those exports come with Premium and Enterprise.
- You want to map your own data next to public layers. Map Room data upload comes with Pro and higher.
- You value maturity. CARES says it has supported community data work in health, government and nonprofits for over thirty years.
When to choose GeoChat AI
GeoChat AI fits when your question is specifically about healthcare supply and demand, and you want to ask it in plain language.
- Your focus is access gaps. Its interactive maps show supply-demand gaps, provider deserts and population health patterns.
- You want to ask, not browse. You type a question, then follow up, drill into ZIP codes or compare regions in the same chat.
- Your program matches its use cases. The platform offers CHNA, personal care and home health, PACE, rural health, community health worker and workforce analysis use cases.
- You need a no-cost start. The free tier needs no credit card.
- You want expert help. Paid services cover expert review of AI findings, primary research and community interviews, custom needs assessment reports, methodology design and stakeholder presentation support.
- You need a map that doesn't exist yet. Nonprofit organizations can request a new map, and those requests shape what gets added.
GeoChat AI limits
- It is a new platform; the current version is GeoChat Atlas (version 2).
- Provider counts are NPPES registrations, not full-time clinicians, so they overstate available capacity.
- Its data centers on healthcare supply and demand, built from public sources such as ACS and NPPES. For housing, crime or environmental indicators, SparkMap covers far more ground.
Using both
The two tools cover different parts of the same assessment, so they work well together.
- Run a SparkMap CNA report for your service area to get baseline indicators and state benchmarks.
- Ask GeoChat AI where healthcare supply falls short of demand, then drill into ZIP codes and compare regions.
- Before comparing figures, check which ACS release each tool uses. SparkMap's reports use the 2020–2024 ACS release (see ACS 5-year estimates).
- Check geography definitions, since ZIP codes and ZCTAs are not the same (ZCTA vs ZIP code).
- Use SparkMap tables for the indicator section, and GeoChat AI findings to shape the access-gap section.
How to choose
- Pick SparkMap if your deliverable is a standard indicator report with benchmarks, or you need Word and Excel exports.
- Pick GeoChat AI if your deliverable is an access-gap analysis and your team would rather ask questions than build reports.
- If you need provider counts by area, GeoChat Atlas counts NPPES registrations by county and ZIP code. Check SparkMap's indicator list for what each SparkMap plan includes.
- With no budget, start with both free options. SparkMap's free account covers a single county with PDF export, and GeoChat AI's free tier needs no credit card.
- Test each tool on your own service area before paying. To discuss GeoChat AI's expert services, book a call.

Frequently asked questions
Is SparkMap free?
Partly. A free SparkMap account gives basic Map Room and Community Needs Assessment features; free needs assessment reports cover a single county, with PDF export. Paid plans start at $179 per year as of November 2026.
Is SparkMap the same as CHNA.org or Community Commons?
No. SparkMap is built by CARES at the University of Missouri. CHNA.org now forwards to a Community Commons CHNA collection, and Community Commons lists SparkMap's Community Needs Assessment as a CARES tool.
Can SparkMap make ZIP code level CHNA reports?
Yes, on a paid plan. ZIP reports come with annual Premium subscriptions ($4,999 per year as of November 2026) and can be added to quarterly Premium plans.
Can GeoChat AI count the providers in my service area?
Yes, by county and ZIP code. GeoChat Atlas counts providers from the NPPES registry (October 2026 file). Counts are registrations, not full-time clinicians.
Which tool is better for a hospital CHNA?
SparkMap is built for standard indicator reports with state benchmarks and Word or Excel export. GeoChat AI fits the access-gap part of the work, where you ask follow-up questions about supply and demand. Many teams can use both.
Map access gaps for your community. GeoChat AI is free to use, with no credit card required. Ask questions in plain language, drill into ZIP codes and compare regions.
